William De Soto (Political Studies) Faculty Profile

I have been a faculty member in the department of political science since 1990.  I have served on several university committees as well as task forces addressing topics like surveying alumni attitudes about their experiences at Texas State and exploring ways to help our students become more internationally aware. I have been actively involved in eight city of San Marcos citizen boards.  I have been chair or vice chair of the city’s charter review commission, the bond commission, the planning and zoning commission, and the ethics review commission.  The faculty senate has an important role in protecting crucial principles like faculty governance.  The Texas state legislature is considering numerous bills that may significantly impinge on our Bobcat community.  I would like to help our faculty senate protect essential faculty interests.

Valentina Glajar (World Languages and Literatures) Faculty Profile

I am a Professor of German Studies and an Honorary Professor of International Studies, and I coordinate the German Program at TXST. From 2005 to 2020, I served as the Fulbright Program Adviser at TXST, mentoring numerous students who received grants to study or teach abroad in countries such as Germany, Spain, Bulgaria, Iceland, and the United Kingdom.  As a result, TXST was recognized as a Top Producing Fulbright Institution for the first time ever in 2009–2010, and again in 2013–2014.

I was elected to serve on the Faculty Senate in 2024, and then again in 2025. During my brief tenure, I had the privilege of serving on two subcommittees. One reviewed an outdated policy that restricted internal and external research funding. The other revised the Faculty Developmental Leave application form.

While I have written and co-edited several books, the highlight of my research career came in 2019 when I received the first ACLS Fellowship at TXST. This fellowship enabled me to finish my monograph, The Secret Police Dossier of Herta Müller (Camden House, 2023). The book won the 2025 George Blazyca Prize from the British Association of Slavonic and East European Studies. It was also translated and published by the Romanian press Polirom in March 2025. To promote the book, Polirom organized TV and radio interviews for me and arranged a book tour to Bucharest and four other major Romanian cities in the summer of 2025..
