What is an illicit discharge?

An illicit discharge is any material not entirely made up of stormwater that is discharged into a waterway such as a creek, river, or ocean. Spills of chemicals, oils, or other pollutants on roads or parking lots can be considered illicit discharges if not properly cleaned up. Illegal dumping involves purposefully discharging pollutants into the MS4 (storm drains, ditches, etc.).

Examples of illicit discharges include:

  • Soaps and detergents
  • Automotive fluids
  • Household chemicals
  • Paints
  • Sediment
  • Raw sewage
  • Leaves and grass
  • Cooking oils and grease
