What is an illicit discharge?

An illicit discharge is any material not entirely made up of stormwater that is discharged into a waterway such as a creek, river, or ocean. Illegal dumping involves purposefully discharging pollutants into the MS4 (storm drains, ditches, etc.).

Examples of illicit discharges include:

  • Automotive fluids
  • Household chemicals
  • Paints
  • Sediment
