NOCTI Teacher Tests

The Testing, Evaluation, and Measurement Center (TEMC) at Texas State University administers the "written test" of the NOCTI (National Occupational Competency Testing Institute) Teacher Tests.

We do not give, and Texas does not require, the “performance test.”

Even though it is called a “written test,” that is just to distinguish it from the performance test; however, the most common delivery of the written test is as an online, multiple-choice test. Nevertheless, if you prefer, NOCTI does also offer a paper & pencil version of each test. Let us know if you would prefer this version; otherwise, the default is to order the online test.

The time limit for all NOCTI Written Teacher Tests is 3 hours; however, the test can be taken in one 3-hour session, two 90-minute sessions, or three 60-minute sessions. The default is one three-hour session, so if you want to split it up, please notify us by email at proctor@txstate.edu after submitting your request form.

Note: if you choose to test through virtual proctoring from your home or office, only the single three-hour session is available.

TEMC does not play any part in the teaching certification process, except in administering or arranging the NOCTI Written tests, and providing the scores to the designated recipients. For all questions about other aspects of the certification process and requirements, please contact the agency that would be awarding the certificate.

  • NOCTI does not provide or sell any sort of study guide for their Teacher Tests, but they do publish "blueprints" which provide a basic overview of each test. These can be downloaded from the NOCTI Teacher Testing Blueprints page.

Questions not answered above should be sent to proctor@txstate.edu.

  • The fee for taking a NOCTI test is $150. A link to make your payment online will be sent upon submission of the email request.

Note: TEMC cannot provide refunds for any fees or payments beyond five business days from the date of payment. Your payment receipt is valid for 90 days from the date of purchase. It is essential to submit an appointment request within this timeframe to be eligible for testing.

  • To request a NOCTI Teacher Test, please complete the NOCTI Request Form.

TEMC orders NOCTI exams only in response to demand; therefore, we order the test materials after payment has been made and all other necessary information has been submitted. Requests should be submitted at least 7-10 business days prior to the date you wish to test. Score reports are usually available 3-6 business days after testing.

Note: when filling out the request form, in the score recipient question, what we’re looking for is the agency, school district, or alternative certification organization that needs to receive your score for you to proceed in your certification process. Don’t worry, we automatically copy you on that email too, so you will get a copy of your score report.

  • If testing in San Marcos would be unduly inconvenient for you, we can help arrange a remote administration of the test closer to your location. We will use the zip code provided when you fill out your request form to help you find a good location for your test. Most alternate test sites will charge an additional fee for their services. This is in addition to the fee paid to Texas State University.

Another option is to test from your home or office using the virtual proctoring service Exam Room. To use this option, your testing location will need:
