Hard magnetic composites which are also referred to as permanent magnets bonded with polymer, have a substantial impact on automation equipment, medical devices, and motors, sensors, and actuators. Investigation of the use of thermosets that possess increased dimensional stability, improved thermal resistance, and superior mechanical properties could lead to the production of parts and devices that can withstand higher operating temperatures. In addition, learning how thermoset materials behave in a magnetic field can help to optimize the Magnetic Field Assisted Additive Manufacturing (MFAAM) procedure. Our main target is to test the applicability of thermoset and strontium ferrite oxide [SrO(Fe2O3)6] composite for actuators especially artificial muscles of a robot. I am using two different polymers: (1) PDMS which is so flexible and can be thermally cured. I used this thermoset to study the curing in-situ in a vibrating sample magnetometer; (2) Elastic 600 which can be cured efficiently using UV light of 405 nm. This material allows me to 3D print the magneto-elastomer composite.
Focus is on developing deposition and characterization methods for magneto-elastic composites, including magneto-elastic sampleholder for VSM, Magnetostriction setup, Mini Materials tester, and various MFAAM SLA printers.
