Undergraduate Instructional Assistants

Undergraduate Instructional Assistants (UGIAs) teach introductory labs for the Department of Physics.  All UGIAs are paid $14 an hour.  Job duties include: initial safety meeting at the beginning of the semester (2 hours), weekly prep meetings (1-2 hours), instruct assigned labs and record attendance (2-3 hours per lab), grade assignments (max of 3 hours per lab, per week), and office hours (1 hour per week, per lab).

Student Workers

Student workers fill multiple roles in the Department of Physics.  They usually work directly with faculty on research projects.  Student workers can be graduate or undergraduate, work up to 25 hours per week (20 hours per week for international students), and pay ranges from minimum wage ($7.25) up to $17 per hour.  Individuals interested in this type of employment should follow up directly with faculty to see if any positions are currently available in their research group.

Graduate Instructional Assistant (GIA)

Graduate Instructional Assistants (GIAs) teach physics labs as need by the department and are expected to work 20 hours a week. Graduate students that meet the requirements for employment in the United States and are eligible for a graduate assistantship can request a position. Some new graduate students will get a GIA offer along with their acceptance into the program. Summer positions are limited and selected based on department needs and review of applicants by the Graduate Committee.

Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)

Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) are selected by faculty to assist with their research projects.  These offers will come directly from faculty with sufficient funding to pay for their graduate assistant salaries.  Pay range is dependent on budget for the paying account and the University Pay Plan as shown below.  GRAs must meet requirements for employment in the United States and requirements to be eligible for graduate assistantship.
