Departmental of Physics Scholarships

Students interested in being considered for the Physics Department Scholarships described below should complete the online application form (linked below) by February 1. More details below.

Robert E. and Frances Anderson Scholarship (application deadline: February 1)

This scholarship is in honor of former department chair Robert Anderson.

Criteria and Eligibility: Major in physics, 3.5 GPA, taking at least 12 hours, and making satisfactory progress toward a degree as determined by the Physics Department Scholarship Committee. For entering freshmen, ACT score of 27 or SAT score of 1150 (in lieu of GPA requirement above).

Award: Two Anderson Scholarships are awarded each year, with a maximum value of $1000 per scholarship (the exact value of each scholarship depends on the funds available from the scholarship endowment). Students who receive this scholarship may apply to renew the scholarship for three additional years as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements above.

Dr. James R. Crawford Scholarship (application deadline: February 1)

This scholarship is in memory of former department chair James Crawford.

Criteria and Eligibility: Continuing undergraduate student (having completed at least one semester at TXST) majoring in physics; selection based on academic achievement, involvement in the department, need, and future academic and career goals.

Award: One Crawford Scholarship is awarded each year with a maximum value of $1000 per scholarship (the exact value of each scholarship depends on the funds available from the scholarship endowment). Students who receive this scholarship may apply to renew the scholarship as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements above.

Griffin Family Scholarship (application deadline: February 1)

This scholarship is in honor of the parents of Richard Griffin, an alumnus of the physics program at Texas State University.

Criteria and Eligibility: For a full-time student pursuing a degree in physics at Texas State University. Preference will be given to students based on merit over financial needs. Juniors and seniors that are members of the Society of Physics Students are encouraged to apply.

Departmental of Physics Awards

Departmental awards recipients are nominated by physics faculty, selected by the Physics Department Scholarship Committee, and approved by the Physics Department faculty. Recipients are honored at the Physics Award Ceremony each spring.

Students interested in being nominated for the Physics Department Awards described below should contact a member of the Physics Department Scholarship Committee (listed above).

Outstanding Beginning Physics Major

Criteria: Awarded to a physics major who completes the introductory sequence (PHYS 1430, PHYS 2425, and PHYS 2435) in the previous fall or spring semester and demonstrates high scholarship.

Award: A boxed set of The Feynman Lectures on Physics, a $200 award, and an award certificate.

Outstanding Graduating Senior

Criteria: Awarded to a student who graduated or will graduate during the academic year (August through May), and who has demonstrated high scholarship and service.

Award: A $300 award and an award certificate.

Outstanding Learning Assistant Award

Criteria: Awarded to a student who served as an outstanding Physics Learning Assistant in the current academic year.

Award: A one-year Student Membership to the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) with electronic access to the American Journal of Physics and The Physics Teacher, an award certificate, and a letter of recognition from AAPT.

Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Award

Criteria: Awarded to a student who served as an outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Assistant in the current academic year.

College of Science and Engineering Scholarships & Awards

The College of Science and Engineering offers several scholarships and awards for undergraduate students, some of which require nomination by the department and some of which students can apply for directly. Most COSE scholarship applications deadlines are February 1st.

For awards requiring departmental nomination, the Physics Department Scholarship Committee selects nominees with input from all physics faculty. Students interested in being nominated for the College of Science and Engineering scholarships and awards described below should contact a member of the Physics Department Scholarship Committee (listed above). Additional information on these awards can be found on the College of Science and Engineering scholarships website.

Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award

This award recognizes a College of Science and Engineering undergraduate student who possesses outstanding characteristics in scholarship and service.

Criteria and Eligibility: Awarded to an Undergraduate student in the College of Science and Engineering whose Texas State GPA is 3.25 or greater, based on 90 hours, of which at least 30 hours are earned at Texas State University, and who exhibits leadership and participation in departmental, college or university activities.

Award: A plaque presented to the student, and a perpetual plaque with the student's name displayed in the Dean's office.

Process: This award requires departmental nomination; nominations are due to the Physics Department Scholarship Committee in mid-January. Application deadline February 1st. More detail and application information is provided at College of Science and Engineering scholarships website.

Smith-Willms Scholarship

Criteria and Eligibility: This scholarship will be awarded to a junior undergraduate student majoring in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics to help provide financial support during the senior year. Nominees will have a record of exceptional academic achievement and will normally have completed three-quarters of the required courses in their major and minor fields. Special consideration will be given to students who have expressed an interest in graduate studies and in pursuing careers in teaching and research.

Award: A one-time tuition credit of up to $2400 (dependent on endowment) and a plaque.

Denison-Koehn Endowed Science Scholarship

Criteria and Eligibility: This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in the College of Science and Engineering to help provide financial support. Applicants must be full-time students and have a minimum Texas State GPA of 3.00, demonstrate financial need, and not receive other forms of financial aid. Applicants must submit a FAFSA for the award year. In order to receive the award the successful applicant must remain a full-time student in the College of Science and Engineering.

Award: The amount of the award will range from $1000 to $2500, to be credited towards the recipient's tuition/fees.

Durrenberger Scholarship for Women in Science

Criteria and Eligibility: This scholarship is awarded to women pursuing an undergraduate, master’s, or PhD degree in the College of Science and Engineering. Evidence of excellence to be included in the application packet should include, but is not limited to, an updated CV or resume emphasizing scholarly accomplishments and previous honors, and a statement of personal and professional goals related to how a degree in the sciences may have greater societal impact.

Award: $1000 to $6000, depending on the level of the student.

Mariel M. Muir Endowed Science Scholarship

Criteria and Eligibility: This scholarship will be awarded to a junior undergraduate student majoring in the College of Science and Engineering to help provide financial support during the senior year. Applicants must be full-time students and have a minimum Texas State GPA of 3.60 and at least 30 Texas State hours at the end of the first semester in their junior year. Besides having a record of exceptional academic achievement, students must have shown a commitment to campus and/or community activities that demonstrates leadership outside the classroom. Students who have previously applied for this Scholarship are not eligible to re-apply.

Award: $1300 in the senior year.

Emmie Craddock Scholarship

This scholarship is administered by the Honor's College: $1,500/year.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must be enrolled at Texas State University with a major in Chemistry, English, History, or Physics, OR be an active member of the Honors College. Continuing (currently enrolled) or transfer students who meet the criteria must have a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher.
Recipients are required to maintain an overall and semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher.
Applicants must enroll in at least 15 hours per semester.

Selection Criteria:

Applicants will be evaluated on:
Their past academic achievement, as evidenced by their GPA and letters of recommendation.
Their future academic promise (as evidenced in letters of recommendation)

Application Requirements:

Completion of online scholarship application.
Two letters of recommendation. Please note that letters from high school teachers and counselors are strongly discouraged as letters should reflect your work in college.

University Scholarships & Awards

The Physics Department Scholarship Committee selects departmental nominees for University scholarships and awards, with input from all physics faculty. Students interested in being nominated for the University scholarships and awards described below should contact a member of the Physics Department Scholarship Committee (listed above).

Other Scholarships

LBJ Outstanding Senior Award is given annually by the Alumni Association to a student as recognition for outstanding leadership, character, campus and community involvement, and academic success. Recipients must be candidates for graduation in May of the year that the award is conferred or have graduated the previous August or December. The recipient is recognized at the May commencement ceremony and receives a $1,500 stipend. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, April 24, 2018, apply via http://www.finaid.txstate.edu/scholarships/boss.html.

Texas State University Outstanding Senior Award

Nominating: Faculty and staff are invited to submit nominations for the Texas State University Outstanding Senior Award each year. Eligible students include Texas State undergraduates who graduated or will graduate during the academic year (August through May) they are being nominated. This award, presented annually at the May commencement ceremonies, is based on leadership, scholarship, character, potential, and loyalty to Texas State University.

Applying: Eligible nominees will be sent an email with the application to complete if they are interested in accepting the nomination. The application must be submitted with a cover letter, resume, essay, and two recommendation letters. A committee of faculty and staff review all applications to select the award finalists.

Presidential Upper Level Scholarship

The Presidential Upper Level Scholarship Program provides financial assistance and special recognition to a limited number of undergraduate students who have been outstanding in their college work. Each of the eight undergraduate colleges (excluding the Honors College) will be authorized to choose one student per year for the award.

Criteria and Eligibility: 60 or more credits earned by the time the scholarship is funded (fall term). Thirty of the sixty credits must have been earned at Texas State. Academic achievement, as shown by grades and other standards expected and defined by departments, will be the principal criteria for the selection of recipients. Breadth of interests and achievements normally will take precedence over narrow pursuits. Leadership in departmental or school and other activities will be considered important, if they do not detract from academic achievements in classroom-related activities.

Award: $1200, for one year only.
