Time Warner Cable Supports Mathworks

Texas Mathworks

San Marcos, TX - May 13, 2011

Mathworks, a center for math education at Texas State University, has received a $5,000 donation from Time Warner Cable through the company’s Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative.

The contribution from Time Warner Cable will directly support operational supplies and camp scholarships for middle school students to attend the 2011 Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC) Mathworks will conduct in San Marcos this summer. Established 16 years ago, the JSMC engages 4th through 8th graders in hands-on, guided discovery learning of mathematics. The program lays a solid foundation for future math courses as young students learn pre-algebra and algebraic concepts. The 2011 camp runs June 6–17 and will be held at Miller Middle School in San Marcos.

“We are honored and happy to announce that Time Warner Cable is once again supporting the Mathworks Junior Summer Math Camp at Texas State. This donation connects Mathworks to the Time Warner Cable ‘Connect a Million Minds’ initiative supporting education for young students throughout the country. Our math camps engage and excite young children in doing mathematics with hands-on activities and explorations, preparing students for algebra and higher-level mathematics,” said Dr. Max Warshauer, director of Texas Mathworks and Regents Professor of Mathematics.

Time Warner Cable has committed $100 million of cash and in-kind resources to their five-year philanthropic Connect a Million Minds initiative, addressing America’s continuing decline in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by inspiring students to pursue STEM based educational activities. CAMM is the first-of-its-kind national aggregator of afterschool STEM opportunities, providing parents with a free and easy way to find fun, hands-on learning opportunities for their kids.

“We need to be proactive in our efforts to promote student interest in STEM based education and close the gap between students and their peers from around the world,” said Stacy Schmitt, vice president of communications for Time Warner Cable. “Mathworks is doing a great job inspiring children to take an active role in learning math, while making it fun and engaging.”

About Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds Initiative
Time Warner Cable (TWC), the second-largest cable operator in the U.S., launched Connect a Million Minds (CAMM), a five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which puts our children at risk of not competing successfully in a global economy. Using its media assets, TWC creates awareness of the issue and inspires students to develop the STEM skills they need to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. Program highlights include: original PSAs that challenge public perceptions of STEM; a unique website, www.connectamillionminds.com, where parents and community members can pledge to connect young people with the wonders of science; and “The Connectory”, a one-of-a-kind online resource that makes it simple and easy for parents and students to find informal science and technology learning opportunities in their communities. TWC’s national CAMM partners are CSAS (Coalition for Science After School) and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Local TWC markets are activating CAMM across the country with community-specific programs and partnerships.
