Richardson Foundation Awards Grant to Mathworks

San Marcos, TX – May 28, 2010

The Sid W. Richardson Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Mathworks program at Texas State University – San Marcos. The funding will provide support for all of the Mathworks programs, with a focus on the Mathworks curriculum project that prepares all students for success in algebra and higher level mathematics. This is the sixth time that the Richardson Foundation has awarded a grant to Mathworks.

“The support from the Richardson Foundation has enabled Mathworks to begin exciting new programs for students and teachers. ‘Richardson Fellows’ attend Texas State and have an opportunity to get an early introduction to teaching. This $50,000 grant will support training teachers in McAllen to teach the Mathworks curriculum both in summer camps and during the school year. Teachers from McAllen will then pilot the Mathworks curriculum during the school year, with students completing their first year of algebra by the end of 8th grade. This helps to address one of the most challenging problems we face in education, namely to prepare all students for algebra and higher level mathematics,” said Dr. Max Warshauer, Director of Mathworks.

Val Wilkie, the Executive Vice-President of the Foundation, noted, “The Richardson Foundation has been very pleased to support Mathworks, which addresses both teaching and learning math, particularly at the middle school level where the mastery of Algebra I is the gateway to success in higher levels of mathematics.”
