Mathworks Alumni Win Special Awards at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair

Reno, Nevada, USA - Society for Science & the Public, in partnership with the Intel Foundation, this evening annouced awards at the Intel ISEF 2009 Special Awards Ceremony which was sponsered by Agilent Technologies.  Student winners are ninth through twelfth graders who earned the right to compete by winning top prize at local, regional, state, or national science fairs.  Special Awards are presented by over 60 scientific, professional and educational organizations and include scholarships, summer internships, book and equipment grants, and scientific field trips.

Sameer Deshpande, Jeffrey Chan, and Alicia Zhang won three special awards for their paper "Survival Analysis of Gene Expression Data Using a Hybrid Dimension Reduction Technique.  Their awards include:

  • American Statistical Association, First Award of $1,000
  • American Mathematical Society: Karen Menger Award of Excellence, Third Award of $250
  • Mu Alpha Theta, National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society, First Award of $1,000

Sameer Deshpande, 18, Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, Denton, Texas attended the Honors Summer Math Camp in 2006-2008 and will return in 2009 as a counselor.  Jeffrey Chan, 16, Williams P. Clements High School, Sugar Land, Texas attended the Junior Summer Math Camp in 2005-2006 and the Honors Summer Math Camp in 2006-2008.  Alicia Zhang, 17, Liberal Arts and Science Academy High School, Austin, Texas attended the Honors Summer Math Camp in 2005, 2007-2008, and will return as a counselor in 2009.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, annually provides a forum for more than 1,500 high school students from over 50 countries to showcase their independent research. The Intel ISEF is the premiere science competition in the world exclusively for students in grades 9–12.

Each year, millions of students worldwide compete in local and school-sponsored science fairs; the winners of these events go on to participate in Intel ISEF-affiliated regional and state fairs from which the best win the opportunity to attend the Intel ISEF. The Intel ISEF unites these top young scientific minds, showcasing their talent on an international stage, enabling them to submit their work to judging by doctoral level scientists—and providing the opportunity to compete for nearly $4 million in prizes and scholarships.
