H-E-B Tournament of Champions Awards Grant to Mathworks

San Marcos, TX – May 20, 2010

The H-E-B Tournament of Champions has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Mathworks program at Texas State University – San Marcos. The funding will support the Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC) in McAllen, providing student scholarships and supplies. In its 13th summer of operation, the McAllen JSMC is directly modeled after the summer math camps that are conducted annually in San Marcos by Mathworks. Over 150 elementary school students attend the McAllen JSMC each summer. The JSMC is designed to prepare students for algebra and higher level mathematics using hands-on activities and explorations.

“We are delighted to have support from the H-E-B Tournament of Champions for the McAllen JSMC. The teachers from McAllen who work with the summer camp are just amazing. These camps help students transition to using the Mathworks curriculum during the school year at Fossum and Travis Middle Schools, preparing all students to begin algebra by 8th grade or earlier. The McAllen summer math camps have become a tradition in McAllen, and we are happy that H-E-B is providing the support needed to make these camps available to many more students,” said Dr. Max Warshauer, Director of Mathworks.
