3M Supports The Mathworks Curriculum Project

San Marcos, TX - October 31, 2011

The 3M Foundation has donated $3,000 to support the Mathworks curriculum implementation at Kealing Middle School in Austin, Texas.  The magnet program of Kealing uses the Mathworks curriculum with their advanced 6th grade students.  The donation provides critical funds for newly developed Mathworks student workbooks that pair with the curriculum.

“We are delighted to once again have 3M's support for our curriculum project.  The student workbooks enable the students to organize their notes - including example problems, key vocabulary, and reflections on lessons learned.  The feedback that we receive from the students and teachers at Kealing will enable us to continually improve the Math Explorations curriculum,” said Dr. Max Warshauer, Director of Mathworks and Regents Professor of Mathematics.

"It can be challenging to find curriculum and resources that address the needs of advanced learners, so we are very appreciative of the generous donation of textbooks and workbooks for our sixth grade Magnet math students by Mathworks at Texas State," noted Beth Cooper, director of the magnet program at Kealing.

3M's regional manager for government and community affairs Russell Bridges added, "Advanced math skills will help these young students excel both in college and careers.  3M is proud to partner with Mathworks to help provide these tools to boost math achievement."

The Mathworks Math Explorations textbooks for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades have been implemented over the past three school years in districts across the state.  Data has shown that student use of the curriculum correlates strongly with gains in algebra readiness skills.
