Harman-Mayes-Sooch Family Fund supports Mathworks programs
Mathworks at Texas State University received a $54,000 grant from the Harman-Mayes-Sooch Family Fund to support the 2022 Mathworks Summer Math Camps and Academic Year Program. This money will be used to provide camp scholarships for economically disadvantaged students and ensure that all students can attend Mathworks programs regardless of their financial situation.
The Summer 2022 programs include: a two-week half-day Junior Summer Math Camp for 200 students in grades 3-8, a two-week residential Junior Summer Math Camp for 60 middle school students, and a six-week Honors Summer Math Camp for 72 high school students. All three programs excite young students with the joy of mathematical discovery and prepare students with the foundation they need to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The grant also supports a school-based Academic Year Program designed to prepare all students for success in algebra by eighth grade using the state-adopted Mathworks Math Explorations curriculum.
These programs introduce students to higher-level mathematics through hands-on activities and problem solving. Students experience the joy of mathematical exploration and discovery while developing the foundation needed to be successful in advanced classes in math and science. Most importantly, students develop problem-solving abilities that will be useful no matter what career path they choose to pursue.
