2016 PMWC Team met Governor Abbott at the Texas Capitol
Governor Abbott met the Mathworks Primary Math World Contest team which finished tied for first in the world in the Po Leung Kuk Primary Math World Contest in Hong Kong in July. The team consisted of four students from Texas who were selected from over 400 students who took the Mathworks Math Contest in 2015. Amy Zhou, Andrew Cai, Michelle Wang, and Pierce Lai trained at the Mathworks Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC), and made up the team representing Texas as well as the United States at this international mathematics competition. Governor Abbott presented each student with a certificate and congratulated the team on their outstanding success.
Amy, Andrew, Michelle, and Pierce also spoke at a luncheon beforehand about their experiences preparing for the competition at the Mathworks JSMC, and about meeting students from all over the world in Hong Kong.
The luncheon was attended by Howard Falkenberg representing the Mathworks Steering Committee, Jackie Padgett from Silicon Labs, Greg Kozmetsky and Jami Hampton from RGK Foundation, Eric Harslem and Rani Clasquin from KLE Foundation, and Janet Harman and Mary Verhaeghe from KDK-Harman Foundation. The coaches and team leaders, Jian Shen, Hiroko Warshauer, and Michelle Pruett from Texas State, and Cody Patterson from the University of Texas San Antonio were in attendance along with Mathworks Director Max Warshauer, Associate Director of Mathworks Terry McCabe, and Chairman of Mathematics, Susan Morey.
