Mathworks Curriculum: 2010-2011 Report

 During the 2010-2011 school year, the Mathworks curriculum was implemented in four school districts, impacting over 3,000 middle school students.  By introducing students to pre-algebra and algebraic concepts while they are young, the curriculum gives all students a solid foundation for success in Algebra.

The Orleans-Hanna Algebra Prognosis was administered as a pre- and post- program measure at Kealing, New Braunfels, and Midland for 6th and 7th grade students using the Mathworks curriculum.  All student groups achieved statistically significant gains on the Prognosis, indicating gains in algebra readiness.

A. The Kealing Magnet Program 6th grade students started at the beginning of the school year below 7th grade level, as measured by the Orleans-Hanna (OH) Algebra Prognosis.  At the end of the school year, their algebra readiness was well above the 8th grade national norm.

B. The New Braunfels 6th grade students were well below the 7th grade national norm.  At the end of the school year, their average scores on the OH Algebra Prognosis were slightly above the 8th grade national norm.

C. The New Braunfels 7th grade students started out below the 7th grade national norm, and achieved results above the 8th grade norm by the end of the school year.

D. Midland 6th grade students were well below the 7th grade national norm.  By the end of the school year, students' algebra readiness was almost on par with the 8th grade national norm.

E. Midland pre-AP 7th grade students started out slightly below the 7th grade national norm.  By the end of the school year, their algebra readiness was well above the 8th grade national norm.
