Department of Philosophy
Policy on Independent Studies

Adopted April 2019

Independent study courses are offered as a way of teaching material not covered in regular courses.
These courses are tailored to each individual student based on a course proposal submitted by the student to an advising faculty member (and, ideally developed in consultation) and approved by the relevant program Coordinator and the Chair of the Department of Philosophy.

It is preferred for an undergraduate independent study course have some component of research, whereas such a component is required for the graduate independent study course.
