Curation Certificate

The Department of Anthropology offers our undergraduate majors a Certificate in the Curation of Anthropological Collections for students who complete ANTH3376N, “Curation of Archaeological Materials,” plus an internship at any of several recognized repositories of artifacts or human remains. There is currently no licensure requirement for curation in the United States, so the certificate is not a requirement to work in these areas and is not tied to an accreditation process outside the Anthropology Department. However, students who earn this certificate will, we believe, stand out to agencies hiring for collections management positions. The Department of Anthropology at Texas State University maintains close relationships with CRM firms, State archaeological repositories, and museums, and the certificate underscores that the graduate has taken advantage of our department’s strength in materials curation.

The procedure for earning this certificate is as follows:

1. Complete ANTH3376N Curation of Archaeological Materials with a grade of “A” or “B.”
2. Complete ANTH4390 Internship in Anthropology with a grade of “A” or “B” during a subsequent semester by pursuing an internship at a qualifying repository, such as the Texas Historical Commission (Historic Sites or Archaeology divisions), Center for Archaeological Studies, Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife archaeology lab, Witte Museum, San Antonio Museum of Art, Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State, or other entities approved by the internship coordinator. Note that the internship duties themselves must be centered on materials curation (not all internships at the agencies listed will qualify). 3. The internship coordinator will present you with your certificate at the end of your internship semester.
