Myths of Western Civilization explores how myths, legends, political symbols, and historical narratives have shaped understandings of European history from antiquity to the present. Students engage with texts and traditions connected to Oxford, including Greek, Roman, and Mesopotamian mythology, Arthurian legend, Alice in Wonderland, Robin Hood, comic book superheroes, and the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. Through these stories, they examine how ideas about heroes, villains, gods, and nations have influenced the ways people have understood and interpreted “Western Civilization.” 
 
Drawing on the collections of Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum and its world-renowned libraries, students investigate how history is constructed, interpreted, and contested, culminating in the creation of an original museum tour that traces a major theme or ideal across time.

Course Details

This course examines the concept and history of “Western Civilization” through the study of myth, political symbolism, and historical interpretation from antiquity to the present. Students analyze primary and secondary sources to investigate how narratives, legends, and cultural symbols have shaped understandings of European history and its legacy.
