Dr. Scottie Buehler is a midwife turned historian of medicine. Her research interests lie at the nexus of reproduction, Atlantic world, gender, race, and material culture. Her in-progress book manuscript, Reproducing Midwives in France and the Atlantic World (1750-1820), explores the local negotiations around the widespread implementation of midwifery training programs across France and its Atlantic colonies in the eighteenth-century. Her scholarship has appeared in the Bulletin for the History of Medicine and Early Modern Women and has been supported by the Chateaubriand, the Huntington Library, National Library of Medicine, and the American Association for the History of Nursing.
Dr. Buehler employs her historical expertise to advocate for midwifery nationally through her work with the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council and Think Big Initiative. Adhering to the notion that history shapes professional identities today, Dr. Buehler creates historical accounts that uphold the diversity and complexity of midwifery practices and practitioners throughout time.
Dr. Buehler teaches courses on Western Civilization, history of medicine and reproduction, French history, and Atlantic history. In the classroom, she focuses on skills development and making connections between the past and present.
