Downton Abbey is a twenty-first century phenomenon, which has broadcast life in the English Country House to an unprece-dented worldwide audience. In this lecture, Dr Oliver Cox looks beyond this ‘ Downton Boom' to explain how and why the English Country House continues to capture our imagina-tion, and occupy a unique position within the social, political, cultural and intellectual life of English (and American) society.
