Each track is designed to meet the standards established by the National CPM Consortium. Texas State University students may apply for academic credit through applicable university catalogue courses (see conversions below).
Program Details
Track 1: Public Personnel Administration provides essential information concerning personnel administration. Examples of topics covered may include recruitment/selection, legal personnel issues, organizational culture, performance management, employee engagement, discipline/termination, health/safety, labor relations and collective bargaining, classification, compensation and employee benefits. Track 2: Managing for Quality explores the practices of building quality into public and non-profit organizations. Examples of topics covered may include scenario planning, strategic planning, system’s thinking, Total Quality Management (TQM), public involvement, crisis management and process improvement. Track 3: Organizational Communication covers the flow of communication within and external to an organization. Examples of topics covered may include communicating with governing and oversight bodies, barriers to effective communication, dealing with disagreement and conflict, and public engagement. Improving oral and written skills is also covered in this track. (Texas State Academic Credit Course Conversion PHIL 4388 / PHIL 5388)
Track 4: Public Finance & Budgeting provides essential information concerning the practice of public finance and budgeting. Examples of topics covered may include finance methods, budgeting, public sector accounting, grants, debt management, public finance policy issues, cut-back management and auditing. Track 5: Public Policy Evaluation focuses on how to analyze public policy & program evaluation issues. Examples of topics covered may include the tools and techniques of survey research development, performance measurement and benchmarking, productivity improvement, systems analysis, program assessment. Track 6: Information Systems for Managers presents up to date technology and information systems used by public sector and non-profit sector managers. Examples of topics covered may include social media use and abuse, electronic tools and systems for public engagement, geographic information systems (GIS), SMART cities, automation, cyber security, meeting public expectations and legal requirements related to the use of electronic systems and resources. Track 7: Applied Projects Practicum provides students with the opportunity and tools necessary to prepare a major applied research project related to their organization or area of interest. This track is considered to be the "capstone" of the CPM Program and incorporates lessons and information provided in the 6 other CPM tracks. Earning academic credit through CPM Tracks is only possible at the San Marcos and Round Rock programs. Academic credit cannot be granted retroactively. Please speak to your degree advisor about if you would like to pursue this option.
