M.A. Program

Program Overview

This program has dedicated, learner-centered faculty who are leaders in the field, a focus on reflective practice, emphasizing both theory and skills to become more effective practitioners and leaders, and course delivery formats for working professionals (night, hybrid, and online courses).

Course Work

This program provides the expertise and experience to develop and lead various adult education programs. In addition to the common core, which includes a supervised internship, students are encouraged to take courses appropriate to their career-focused specializations: adult ESL (offered on-campus and online) and workplace, community, and continuing education (offered entirely online).

This program is completely online. If you are not a Texas resident and will not relocate, please visit the Office of Distance and Extended Learning. International applicants will not be eligible to receive a Form I-20 or DS-2019 for an F-1 or J-1 visa from Texas State and may review the eligibility requirements of enrolling in online programs and contact the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) with questions.

Ph.D. Program

Program Overview

The degree completion rate is approximately 30% above the national average. The adult education faculty is internationally recognized for scholarship and leadership. The program cultivates a supportive and diverse learning community, with faculty working together on community engagement projects, research and presentations, and publishing in local, national and international venues.

Course Work

Students are accepted into the Adult, Professional and Community Education (APCE) Ph.D. program once a year, entering as a cohort in the fall. Classes are offered in the evenings to better serve working professionals. The 60-hour curriculum includes 24 hours of major emphasis courses, 18 hours of research courses, six hours of electives and a minimum of 12 hours of dissertation. Dissertation topics reflect the wide range of student practice settings and interests as well as expertise of faculty.
