Scholarships

This endowed scholarship will be established to honor the late Mrs. Bounita Favorite for her service, professionalism, and contributions to the field of polymers engineering. It is hereby resolved that her name shall be forever honored through the perpetuamon of this endowed scholarship. Mrs. Bounita Favorite was born in Villa Platte, Louisiana in 1949 and graduated from James Stephens High School in 1967. After high school, Mrs. Favorite enrolled in Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Mrs. Favorite graduated in December 1971 from Southern University with a Bachelor's Degree in Food Science and Nutrition. Mrs. Favorite enjoyed a successful 40-year career as a Senior Sales Representative at Chemtura Corporation.

Qualifications:

• All undergraduate and graduate College of Science and Engineering majors interested in polymer research
• Students may be part-time or full-time in the fall semester (full-time preferred, but exceptions may be made for last semester students who may not need to be full-time to complete the requirements for graduation)
• Applicants must maintain a 3.0 overall TXST GPA to be considered

This scholarship honors Dr. C.L. Key, former professor and chair of the Chemistry department, and Dr. A.O. Parks, also a former chair and Dean of the School of Science. 

Qualifications:

• Must be a chemistry or biochemistry major
• Shows potential for advanced study in chemistry/biochemistry
• Available for freshman and sophomores
• Must remain a chemistry or biochemistry major at the time of receiving award
• Applicants must be enrolled at Texas State full-time for the upcoming fall semester when funds will be awarded

This endowed scholarship has been established with Alumni donations and matching gift donations to help support students who have demonstrated aptitude for the discipline of chemistry and biochemistry and have significantly contributed to the culture of learning and research in the department.

Qualifications:

• Scholarships awarded to students with a major/minor in Chemistry or Biochemistry
• Available to first-year students, sophomores, juniors, and graduate students
• Applicants must maintain a 3.0 overall TXST GPA to be considered
• Applicants must be enrolled at Texas State for the upcoming fall semester when funds will be awarded

Dorothy and Billy Yager have established a permanent Endowed Scholarship in Organic Chemistry to be used to award outstanding undergraduate students who attend Texas State pursuing a degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry. 

Qualifications:

• Must be a full-time chemistry or biochemistry major at the time of application as well as the upcoming fall semester
• Must have completed, or be currently enrolled in (fall semester), Organic Chemistry II lecture and lab at the time of application 

Dr. David C. Easter has established an endowed scholarship for students attending Texas State University. Dr. Easter began his teaching career to high school students in Hemet, California in 1983. He joined Texas State University in 1993, and was a professor in the Department of Chemistry /Biochemistry for 23 years until his retirement in June 2016. Dr. Easter wrote or partnered in numerous selected publications, and had an affection for teaching to those who were interested to learn. It is his wish to provide financial assistance to a deserving student during their senior year.

Qualifications:

• Must be a chemistry major
• Must have been enrolled in at least 12 hours this past fall as well as 12 for the upcoming spring semester
• Must have completed Physical Chemistry I lecture and lab this past fall, and be enrolled in Physical Chemistry II lecture and lab for this coming spring semester
• Applicants must be enrolled at Texas State full-time for the upcoming fall semester when funds will be awarded

This endowed scholarship has been established by the Irvin family to honor their lasting legacy at Texas State University and to support exceptional students pursuing a degree in Biochemistry. The Irvin family has deep roots at the university, with members serving as graduates, educators, and administrators—most notably within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Dr. James D. Irvin, a longtime faculty member and Distinguished Professor Emeritus, was instrumental in establishing the Biochemistry program. Other family members—Mrs. L. Jean Irvin, Ms. Miriam Irvin Ripplinger, Dr. David J. Irvin, and Dr. Jennifer A. Irvin—have contributed to the fields of science and education as researchers, instructors, and mentors, both at Texas State and beyond.

In recognition of their dedication, the Irvin name will be honored in perpetuity through this scholarship, which supports undergraduate Biochemistry majors who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to the field.

Qualifications:

• Must be enrolled as a Biochemistry major at the time of application and award
• Must maintain a Texas State GPA of at least 3.0
• Must have completed Principles of Biochemistry (CHEM 3375) or its equivalent with a grade of B or better
• Must be enrolled in Analytical Biochemistry (CHEM 3380) and Biochemical Techniques (CHEM 3381), or their equivalent, at the time of application
• Must demonstrate academic excellence in biochemistry coursework
• Must submit a personal statement outlining a commitment to a career in biochemistry
• Must include a letter of recommendation from at least one upper-level (3000+) biochemistry course instructor
• Must earn grades of A or B in biochemistry courses during the year the scholarship is awarded; the scholarship will apply to the following semester

The James and Ann Nell Gann Endowed Student Leadership Scholarship honors Ann Nell Burns and Jim Gann, who met at SWT and went on to impact their community and beyond through their careers. Jim (B.S. Chemistry, 1957) and Ann Nell (B.S. Home Economics, 1958) exemplified dedication to education, hard work, and service. Jim’s career as a chemical plant manager and his leadership in addressing water and environmental issues in the Matagorda Bay area reflect a lifelong commitment to science and community.

The James and Ann Nell Gann Endowed Student Leadership Scholarship will attract, support and help retain Chemistry students who meet the criteria below:

Qualifications:

• Must be of at least junior classification and a chemistry/biochemistry major.
• Must be a full-time student in good standing, with exception for last semester students who may not need to be full-time to complete the requirements for graduation.
• While GPA is a consideration, evidence of leadership will also be weighted in the evaluation of applications. Examples of leadership will also include involvement in student organizations and activities, service to the community, and other leadership qualities including mentoring younger students.

The Larry D. Herwig Research Scholarship was established to fund students in the College of Science and Engineering Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Texas State University.

Qualifications:

• Must be a full-time student in good standing enrolled at Texas State University
• Must have an overall Texas State GPA of a 3.0 or better
• Must be majoring in chemistry or biochemistry
• Must be in the first, second, or third year of his/her undergraduate career at the time of application
• Must remain a chemistry or biochemistry major at the time of receiving award
• Must be currently pursuing a research project at the time of application (fall semester) and throughout the upcoming spring semester 

Larry F. and Barbara S. Wright, hereby acknowledge a gift to establish a permanent endowment that is established to honor the memory of Shirley Harrell Wright, former Texas State University student and deceased spouse of Larry F. Wright, and Colonel Arthur H. Schroder, former Commandant of the Texas State University Air Force ROTC Detachment 840 and deceased spouse of Barbara S. Wright.

Qualifications:

• Texas State GPA of 3.0 or better based on 24 or more Texas State credit hours for undergraduates
• For MA and MS students: only graduate GPA and credit hours are considered and should be based on 9 or more Texas State credit hours.
• Chemistry major
• Must remain a chemistry major at the time of receiving award the upcoming fall semester
• Natural born citizen of the United States
• Based on financial need

To honor the memory of Lois Ann Cofer Monzingo and to provide financial assistance to students pursuing a degree within the Department of Chemistry. Lois Ann was one of those special people that was always helping others. Many lives in her hometown were touched by the caring of this finde woman. Struggling with the loss of her kidney for over nine years, she passed away at a relatively young age of 58.  Her memory will live in many ways. This scholarship is a small portion of that legacy. This endowment was established by Debs and Marsha Cofer in memory of their sister.

Qualifications:

• Incoming freshman student who has declared chemistry major
• Top quarter of his/her graduating class
• Scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years if student maintains a minimum of a 3.0

The Texas State Society of Plastics Engineer (SPE) Chapter provides a scholarship fund specifically for active Texas State SPE Student Chapter members. This scholarship fund was established for students enrolled and involved in polymer research at Texas State University.

Qualifications:

• Awards can be made to graduate or undergraduate students.
• Recipients must be active in the Texas State SPE student Chapter
• Research must be polymer-related
• Applicants must be enrolled at Texas State part-time or full-time for the upcoming fall semester when funds will be awarded
• Must have an overall TXST GPA of a 3.0 or better

Jay Capps has established this scholarship fund for students enrolled at Texas State University in honor of Timothy Eldon Weisheit. Mr. Weisheit, born in Memphis Tennessee in 1960, was a U.S. Army veteran and served from 1977-1983. He lived in Chicago, Tucson and Austin before settling down on a 5-acre farm in Buda, Texas. He was a semiconductor chip fabrication plant engineer by trade, but loved re-engineering anything and making it better. A larger than life individual with a gentle touch, Mr. Weisheit passed in June 2016. This donation is being made from his estate by the executor to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in memory of his love and knowledge of winemaking that he called "Simple Chemistry’. This scholarship is for any students continuing in the upcoming fall semester.

• Must have an overall TXST GPA of a 3.0 or better
• Must be a chemistry or biochemistry major  
• Must be a full-time chemistry or biochemistry major at the time of application as well as the upcoming fall semester

This endowment was established by William H. and Glenda K. Wilcox to support chemistry majors and minors in good standing with the university.

Qualifications:

• Major or minor in chemistry
• Must have an overall TXST GPA of a 3.0 or better, and be in good standing with the university
• Applicants must be enrolled at Texas State part-time or full-time for the upcoming fall semester when funds will be awarded
• Must remain a chemistry major/minor at the time of receiving award
