Doctoral Assistantships

Qualified incoming Ph.D. students are eligible for doctoral instructional and teaching assistantships (20-hour positions). The department and university are committed to providing up to five years of funding to students in good standing in the program.  Possible exceptions are when a student has indicated that they do not need funding. Department of Anthropology Scholarships

The John Michael Kilby Memorial Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Anthropology was established in 2018 in support of student research. The Fellowship annually awards multiple research grants between $1,000-$4,000 to full-time graduate students pursuing a master’s degree or doctorate in anthropology. Graduate students in archaeology, biological anthropology and cultural anthropology are eligible to apply. Contact Dr. David Kilby for more information.


The Grady Early Research Fellowship in Forensic Anthropology provides one-year fellowships for master’s and doctoral students to conduct forensic anthropology research utilizing Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State (FACTS) laboratories and facilities. Fellowship amounts vary but are based on the following criteria:

  1. The potential of the project to advance skeletal research and make a significant contribution to knowledge;
  2. The quality of the proposal with regard to its methodology, scope, theoretical framework, grounding in the relevant scholarly literature, and how FACTS resources will be utilized;
  3. The feasibility of the project and the likelihood that the applicant will execute the work within the proposed time frame;
  4. The broader impact of the proposed research in terms of the potential to benefit society and contribute to the achievement of specific, desired societal outcomes

Travel

Students presenting the results of their research at professional conferences may seek travel funding from the Department of Anthropology, the College of Liberal Arts, and The Graduate College.
