Careers in Construction Management

Construction management is a professional service that manages a project's cost, schedule, quality, safety, scope, and function on behalf of an owner. It isn't one job: it's delivered by a team, and CSM graduates typically build a career along one of a few well-defined tracks.

Every project is unique, more like a prototype than something that can be tested in advance, so the people who manage construction have to plan carefully and solve problems as they come up. That work is organized around six things every construction manager is responsible for:

Distinct Specialization Tracks

CSM students have the opportunity to specialize within the curriculum by choosing elective pathways associated with the Commercial, Heavy Civil, and Residential construction industry sectors.

Heavy Civil

Heavy civil CM is the process of planning, coordinating, and controlling large-scale public infrastructure and horizontal projects—such as highways, bridges, dams, tunnels, and water systems.

Commercial

Commercial CM is the service of planning, coordinating, budgeting, and executing profit-driven building projects—such as office, retail, warehouses, and schools from design through closeout.

Residential

Residential CM is the planning, coordination, and execution of housing including single family and multi family construction projects from design through homeowner handover.
