Identity Concepts & Music: 18th Century Scottish Song Collections

Abstract: Music shapes both individual and collective identity through processes of belonging and differentiation. This lecture applies theoretical approaches to identity formation to Scottish song collections, highlighting their role in national and cultural identification in 18th-century Scotland. By examining how identity is reflected and constructed in these sources, the lecture will demonstrate the value of Scottish song collections for comparative analysis and emphasizes the multidimensional nature of identity in historical music research.

The Speaker: Alina Seibel studied cultural sciences and aesthetic practice at the Universität Hildesheim and recorder at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. Between 2019 and 2023, she worked at Schott Music as assistant in the Concert Opera Media department, while at the same time completing a graduate degree in musicology at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Since December 2023, she has been working as head of events at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz, Germany, where she also teaches music history and research methods.
