The Soap Box Derby, a cherished Homecoming tradition at Texas State since 1967, remains a favorite among students and alumni. At this event, student groups, who sign up to compete, will engage in boxcar races, vying for the prestigious Homecoming Spirit Stick and coveted points towards the President’s Cup. This year’s Soap Box Derby event will also feature food, music, and attractions all honoring this enduring Homecoming tradition.

Inspection Overview
All vehicles must pass the inspection prior to race day. If a vehicle passes inspection on the first date of inspections, the vehicle does not have to return until race day. However, if the vehicle does not pass inspection on the first date of inspection, the vehicle is required to pass inspection by final inspection date.
Each inspection will take 15 minutes to complete.
Drivers are required to:
- be physically present,
- conduct a test run,
- must wear closed-toed shoes, and
- provide their own helmet. Helmets cannot be shared between organizations/teams.
An email confirmation will confirm your inspection time.
Soap Box Loaner Cars - Owned by SI&E
Soap Box Derby Cars owned by Student Involvement and Engagement (SI&E) will be available on a first-come first-serve basis.
There are only ten (10) loaner cars available.
- If selected, groups will be notified when and how to pick up their soap box car.
- It will be the responsibility of the group to transport the car to their storage place until race day.
- Loaner cars are allowed to be painted by the organization.
- All SI&E owned cars must be returned on the day of the event; instructions will be provided when cars are checked out. Late return of or damaged rental car may result in a $100 fine.
