What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
Being above can Texas State University, while being LGBT first generation and Hispanic student, especially within today’s political climate means everything to me. I’m constantly holding two contradictory truth at once it allows me to feel a sense of belonging and an underlying feel of being under scrutiny on one hand, I feel pride within being a bobcat as a Hispanic serving institution Texas state feels like a place where my cultural background crown is not just tolerated, but celebrated and understood. I see myself in the diverse faces of my peers and allowed to be dedicated towards cultural advancement by faculty who understand unique challenges that I faced as a first generation student The shared experience creates a powerful sense of community that makes me feel like I truly belong here another hand of political climate, Texas embark along shadow when I hear about new laws that target diversity equity and inclusion it feels extremely personal. It’s like a direct message from the state that my identity is a topic of debate rather than and ideal of strength it creates tension amongst not only myself, but where I can truly see Where I fit within Texas state this duality has taught me about a lot about resilience, although I continue to embark on my cultural advancement to myself by the power that Texas state has given me being a bobcat at Texas state has allowed me to be a leader, not only within my Hispanic base maternity, but also in terms of identity coming upon Texas state when I arrived at cat camp, I was given a topic of identity and finding oneself That ultimately set the foundation of where I knew I would go with Texas State being a bobcat means everything to me it means being representative it means to be seen and to be hurt and I want to allow those after me to allow themselves to be seen and be heard by somebody who looks like them somebody who understands them and somebody who knows where they’re coming from and where they’re going.

Being a Texas State Bobcat means walking with pride, knowledge, and leadership. Having being involved within my community has taught me how to carry pride within my school and the San Marcos Community. I am involved in BSA and Alpha Delta Pi on campus and I have learned to use my resources and to volunteer when needed. Texas State has given me opportunities to expand my knowledge to those who are younger than me also provide me with a great education.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
Like some of my fellow Bobcats, I am a first-generation college student. Leaving home and stepping into unknown territory was honestly very scary and nerve wrecking but since my first day of freshman year our staff, faculty, and students have never made me feel anything but welcome. Being a bobcat means to be a part of something bigger than yourself and part of a community that makes us feel at home. Our community is what creates us as bobcats. Being involved has helped me grow socially and has taught me the importance of pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, which has helped me grow into the person I am today. Through organizations I have joined, like Diamond Sweethearts, I have created strong friendships that I know will go beyond my time here and for that I only have Texas State to thank. The University has not only opened doors for me socially but also academically. I have had an internship working in the field I am interested in and this year I have been given a great opportunity to be a part of the university’s psychological research teams. This would not have been possible without our dedicated staff and useful resources. These are some things that before coming here I never could have imagined possible. Not only do opportunities like these remind me of how grateful I am for how far I have come but how excited I am for what is yet to come. Though we all love going to support our athletic teams, that is not what being a bobcat is about, it is about learning from others, becoming part of a family, and striving to be better. The tools Texas State has given me are shaping not only my college experience, setting the foundation for a successful future. It would be an honor to be part of one of our university’s most valued traditions and represent a community that has given me so much already.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
Being a Texas State Bobcat means more than just being a percentage to the acceptance rate or simply being at a university. It means embodying pride, strength, and a commitment to growth. Bobcats represent a community that uplifts one another and pushes each other to achieve more than we thought possible. To me, being a Bobcat is about taking the opportunities around us and using them to grow academically, personally, and as student leaders who have found their forever home. One of the clearest examples of this came from my Mass Communications class with Professor Laurie Fluker. From the very first lecture she taught, I could tell how passionate she was about her field and about teaching us. Her energy and dedication made the class engaging in a way that pushed me to look forward to every discussion. She didn’t just teach the material she made us feel connected to it and showed us how it applied to our lives as students and future professionals. That experience taught me that being a Bobcat means giving your best in every space you’re in and inspiring others to do the same. Professor Fluker’s enthusiasm reminded me that the Bobcat spirit is about bringing passion and purpose into everything we do, whether that be within a classroom, a student organization on campus, or in the San Marcos community. Being a Texas State Bobcat means carrying that same energy always no matter who’s watching because you’ll always have a pack behind you.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
As a transfer student who has experienced student life at other institutions, I bring a unique perspective to what it means to be a Texas State Bobcat. After a year at another university, I felt something was missing from my college experience. My heart's desire was an environment that not only fostered learning but also offered opportunities for involvement in campus life and community service. Since becoming a Bobcat, I have found the sense of belonging I craved. I’ve also had the pleasure of experiencing the tremendous pride that comes with being a part of the Texas State family. Being a part of this community means more than just attending classes. It's about belonging to a group of learners who value tradition, leadership, and academic excellence. The incredible individuals I've met during my time in San Marcos have inspired me with their service, passion for learning, and dedication to empowering others. Being a Bobcat means proudly supporting my fellow students in their academic and athletic endeavors, and it fills me with a sense of pride to see their achievements. I have great appreciation for Texas State and its 126-year-long tradition of producing outstanding educators who serve the state of Texas and beyond. I’m proud to be a Bobcat, and I’m honored to carry on that tradition of service and excellence in education for the next generation. It’s a joy to see the beaming faces of children at local elementary schools as my peers and I walk in wearing our gold Texas State College of Education badges, ready to learn and explore together. It's about holding ourselves to the highest standards, to better serve our community, as well as being role models and inspiring students to develop a love of learning.

I noticed the first time I ever stepped on campus the familiar feeling of a hometown, a feeling I hadn't felt at other campuses I toured, so I kept coming back. I toured Texas State four more times since that first time, chasing that feeling. To me, being a Bobcat is more than a university mascot; it's the quiet conversation and infectious laughter in every corner of campus. The quiet spaces filled with the reflective thoughts of Bobcat's past. It's the sun shining through the trees on the LBJ statue and sitting under the bluest of Texas skies at Sewell Park. Being a Texas State Bobcat means community and comfort only to be found in the heart of Texas.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
My dream of becoming a Texas State Bobcat became a reality in the fall of 2021, when I received the life-changing news of my acceptance into this remarkable university. From the moment I stepped onto campus, I knew I was joining a community rooted in pride, purpose, and possibility. I saw Texas State as more than just a place to earn a degree—it was a pathway to leadership, lasting friendships, academic excellence, and a spirit of unity I had long hoped to be a part of. Boko the Bobcat, our fearless mascot, represents toughness, intelligence, and independence—qualities I have come to embrace during my time here. Through every challenge and opportunity, I’ve grown into a more confident, resilient, and driven version of myself. The spirit of Texas State is alive in every classroom, student organization, Greek life, and peaceful San Marcos river moment, reminding me that I belong to something greater than myself. My experiences as a Communication Studies major and Leadership Studies minor have laid a strong foundation for academic and personal growth. The knowledge and skills I’ve gained in my courses have not only sharpened my focus, but also has empowered me to lead with clarity and conviction as the Vice President of Internal Recruitment for Panhellenic. Beyond the classroom, my involvement with Zeta Tau Alpha has enriched my college experience through deep-rooted friendships, leadership roles, and philanthropic initiatives that align with my values. Serving in the Fraternity and Sorority Life department, along with holding leadership positions within the Panhellenic community, has further strengthened my sense of purpose and commitment to service. These experiences have allowed me to mentor others, advocate for causes I believe in, and promote unity across campus. Being part of the Communications Honor Society and serving as the Communication officer has also affirmed my dedication to academic excellence and professional growth. Through it all, Texas State has given me far more than a college experience—it has given me a vision for who I want to be. I am proud to be part of a community that celebrates resilience, honors tradition, and inspires lifelong learning. Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
Over the past three years, I carefully planned my journey to San Marcos and Texas State University, imagining what becoming a Bobcat would mean, but nothing could truly prepare me for the reality of it. In just six weeks, I’ve fully immersed myself in the traditions, expectations, and vibrant opportunities that define life at Texas State. I’ve come to realize that being a Bobcat can be described in one powerful word: pride. I have discovered Bobcat pride by engaging deeply with the Texas State community—through service, leadership, and spirited participation in campus events and athletics. Supporting my school, showing school spirit, and being present for my fellow Bobcats has helped me truly live out our values of support, encouragement, and celebration of diversity. To be a Texas State Bobcat is to be a part of the culture. The community, academics and our traditions. From tailgates and game days to late nights doing homework, to meeting new people in resident common spaces, we all have things in common that connect us and make lifelong relationships. To be a Bobcat is to form bonds and be a part of our community. The students at Texas State don't become a part of the culture, we make the culture. Most freshman Bobcats live in the residential halls and I believe that is the best experience a Bobcat can have. We put in the work to succeed, take our studies seriously, and network with our peers to prepare for the future. Texas State challenges us to grow while giving us the support to achieve our goals. Texas State University is here to lead us to our future to succeed in our future careers and further spread the Texas State name. Alumni from Texas State carry that Bobcat pride after graduation to put a great name for our school. To be a Bobcat is to belong to a community that values connection, growth, and tradition—and to carry that pride wherever life takes us.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
Reflecting on my time here at TXST, the meaning of what it means to be a Bobcat has changed every year. My freshman year, as a first-generation student, being a Bobcat meant going into new spaces and being completely myself, being my most authentic self, being proud of where I came from, and remembering who helped me get here. My mom and my siblings encouraged me to leave Victoria to attend TXST so I could follow my dreams of going to a four-year institution. They are a proud Bobcat family, and I am forever grateful for their support. My sophomore year, as I went into my second semester of being a Resident Assistant, it then became about making my residents feel at home and being a guiding hand for them to find their communities here at Texas State. It meant building strong connections that would help them through their next four years at the university so that they could graduate in the years to come while also reminding them that, along their journey, they should always be themselves, remember where they came from, and move forward without looking back. I was finding out more about myself, realizing I loved being a part of the Texas State community. My junior year, stepping into my first year of being on the Executive Board for University Ambassadors while still serving as a Resident Assistant, being a Bobcat meant taking the experiences I had been through and focusing on building myself as a leader. It was about growing into someone others could depend on to get things done, being a support system, staying true to myself, and maintaining a healthy balance of academics, social life, and personal well-being. As I entered my senior year, I have met so many amazing people and had so many meaningful experiences at Texas State. I had the honor of being placed in the new Richard A. Castro Hall as a fourth-year Resident Assistant where I can serve as a mentor to my fellow staff members, and I also had the privilege of giving a speech at the dedication ceremony for the hall. In that speech, I was able to express the importance of feeling that you matter, that you belong, and that you are at home here at Texas State something I have experienced because of the amazing community we have here. Being a member of University Ambassadors and the Gold Star Society has allowed me to give back to the university and student body that have given me so much. Every Bobcat is different, and we all come from very different backgrounds, but we are united by the common goal of pursuing a degree while also being part of an amazing student body. Every day I see how smart, courageous, and inspiring my fellow Bobcats are. As Bobcats, it means finding our communities and our home here at Texas State, but also coming together for events like football games, orchestra concerts, and student involvement programs while still supporting each other in our goal of getting our degree from Texas State University. I have had such an incredible experience at Texas State University. Being a Bobcat, and all of the amazing people I have met, have led me to where I am today.

Being a Bobcat means carrying forward a legacy that is both profoundly personal and proudly historic. My grandmother graduated from Southwest Texas in 1969, and every day I walk the same Quad she once crossed, I feel her footsteps guiding mine. When I look up at Old Main, I see more than just a landmark. I know the resilience of those who came before me and the promise of the future I’m helping to build. To be a Bobcat is to honor those legacies, celebrate our traditions, and embody a spirit unlike any other campus. We rise to the occasion, underestimated, yet unstoppable. Whether it’s proving we are more than the “party school” stereotype, sparking real change, or competing with universities around us, Bobcats show up with grit, determination, and heart. Like the animal that represents us, we are scrappy, resilient, and impossible to ignore.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
I remember being a senior in high school, unsure of where I wanted to go to college. When I toured Texas State, all I really knew was that our mascot was the Bobcat. I remember asking myself, “What does it truly mean to be a Bobcat?” Going into my final semester, I can finally say that know the answer to that question. Being a Bobcat means being part of a strong, supportive community. Whether I’m in San Marcos, back home, or anywhere else in Texas, if I’m wearing Texas State gear, someone always stops to ask, “Are you a Bobcat?” That simple question has sparked conversations, created friendships, and reminded me that I’m part of something bigger than myself. Getting these questions while not even on campus is exactly why community is so important to being a Bobcat. Being a Bobcat also means taking pride in our school and striving for excellence in everything we do. As a former President of Theta Chi Fraternity, current Vice President of Internal Recruitment for the Interfraternity Council, and a student with a 3.8 GPA preparing for law school, I’ve worked hard to represent the values of leadership, integrity, and ambition that define the Bobcat spirit. I owe all of these accomplishments to the oppurtunities I have been given as a Bobcat, and always look for ways to give back. Most importantly, being a Bobcat means showing up for each other. Whether you're a student, professor, or staff member, we are all part of one family, and supporting that family is something I take seriously. I've also extended that mindset into opportunities outside of school, volunteering and engaging in community efforts that reflect the pride I feel as a Bobcat. These efforts include organizing community service events for my organizations, and supporting other groups on campus. Looking out for my fellow Bobcats is something that I love to do. Running for Homecoming King isn’t just about a title, it’s about celebrating what makes Texas State so special, and helping others find the same sense of purpose, pride, and belonging that I’ve found here. I hope to help those seniors whose shoes I was once in, what it means to be a Bobcat.

Students, faculty, and staff are unified by shared commitments to involvement, community, bobcat spirit, service, and continuous self-reflection to ensure that our collective strengths benefit not only our campus but also the broader world. One of the most impactful lessons I have learned at Texas State came from Dr. Roland Shapley, who emphasized that the core strength of any organization lies in its mission statement. This principle shaped my understanding of our community and deepened my appreciation for what it means to be a Bobcat. Our mission not only defines who we are, but also guides how we serve, grow, and achieve success together. I wear my Bobcat pride every day as a Texas State Tour Guide, welcoming prospective students and educating them about the incredible opportunities that await them here. I often tell my tour guests, What you put into Texas State is what you will get out of it. This belief reflects the welcoming, service-driven spirit that is central to the Bobcat identity. Student involvement has been the cornerstone of my Texas State experience. With more than 350 clubs and organizations, as well as four fraternity and sorority life councils, our university offers countless ways to engage and lead. Joining the Panhellenic community in 2023 was a pivotal moment for me. Today, as Vice President of Recruitment for Alpha Delta Pi, I am honored to welcome new members into Greek life and foster a sense of belonging within our ever-growing community. In 2024, Texas State experienced record-breaking recruitment registration with nearly 700 potential new members, an inspiring testament to the growth of our Bobcat family. Service to the community is another aspect of what it means to be a Bobcat. Each year, Texas State hosts Bobcat Build, a university-wide community service event where students support local needs throughout San Marcos. I have been able to participate in The Big Event two years in a row now. Personally, I have been privileged to volunteer regularly at Sage Spring Senior Living, the San Marcos Animal Shelter, and out local food bank. Beyond our immediate community, I have also served at the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Austin and San Antonio, where I help cook and clean for families whose children are receiving critical medical care. Easing their burdens, even in small ways, its profoundly meaningful to me and reflects the servant leadership Texas State inspires in its students. Throughout these experiences, I have sought to fully embody the Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals of Texas State University. To be a Texas State Bobcat is to be a friend, a leader, and a servant to both campus and community. It is to embrace the Bobcat Spirit and to display it proudly wherever you go. I believe that throughout my involvement, leadership, and service, I have come to exemplify what it truly means to be a Texas State Bobcat; someone who uplifts others, takes pride in our university, and lives out its values every day.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
Being a Texas State Bobcat means being part of something bigger;a community full of pride, resilience, and tradition. I’ve grown a lot here, both in and out of the classroom, and learned what it means to be independent and determined. From game days and river floats to late nights and big wins, we’ve had each other’s backs through it all. The traditions, like shaking the hand of the LBJ statue for luck and singing the fight song, brought us together. It’s the people, the memories, and everything we’ve shared that make this place so special. Texas State isn’t just where we went to college — Texas State is home. Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
To me, being a Texas State Bobcat means embracing resilience, unity, and tradition both inside and outside of the classroom. It is about striving for excellence in everything that we do, supporting each other, and celebrating the diversity that makes our community strong. Being a Bobcat means using our God-given talents and voices to leave a lasting impact on campus and beyond. I’ve seen our unity and school spirit firsthand at our football games, where we all come together to cheer for our team, and at graduation, where students celebrate by jumping into the river. Those special moments capture the pride and tradition of what it means to be a Bobcat. I’ve personally never jumped into the river myself, because I’ve been saving that experience for graduation! A tradition I can’t wait to be a part of this coming May! Ultimately, being a Bobcat is recognizing that I am a part of something bigger than myself. A legacy of dedication, determination, and achievement that continues to grow with every generation.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
A Bobcat is someone who by all odds obtains the goals he is wanting to achieve by the skin of his teeth. We Bobcats work hard to etch out our own name between the colleges in Austin and San Antonio. Excellent schools in their own right but lack the culture of Texas State University. San Marcos has its own culture and personality that you will be hard to find elsewhere. Being a Bobcat is unique in it's own right and between our stairs or the unique layout of our campus I used to remark to my peers thats why they call us Bobcats. We climb up and down like one and we succeed like one.

Being able to say I go to one of the greatest universities in Texas, nay the world, is an absolute privilege and an honor that I hold to the highest value. Being a Bobcat not only means that I am a student here, but that I am also apart of the rich history and promising future here at Texas State. Furthermore, the pride and comradery that you can feel from just stepping foot onto campus is a feeling you get from no other. From LBJ to George Strait, the possibilities of where I can end up after graduation are endless, however I know it will for sure be bright. Overall, being at Texas State means that I am apart of a community represents the state of Texas with pride and integrity.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
To be a Texas State Bobcat means to feel like I'm where I am meant to be . As someone that comes from a small private school I never got the experience of everyone I live around also going to the same school as me. I always felt that I lacked that sense of community. Even though I was constantly involved in extra curricular and organization that provided a sense of camaraderie, it's not the same as living next to or with the people you go to school with. Now that I have arrived in Texas, that sense of community has found me. Through RA hosted events I've made a close group of friends that live along with me in Jackson Hall. The ability to just go knock on a friend's door to see what they're up to is something I didn't have before and something I have always wished for. The feeling of cheering for Texas State at any athletic event in a crowd of other students just gives me the sense that I belong. I think It's that sense of belonging and community that every student can and should feel for it's that sense of community that brings us together as Bobcats. Even with all of the differences in background, race, religion, or politics we can still come together to work towards a common goal of bettering ourselves through education.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
To me, being a Bobcat means opening yourself to new opportunities and embracing the challenges that come with them. As a first-generation student, this journey is about more than just earning a degree, it’s about creating a legacy for myself and my family, showing that anything is possible with hard work and determination. Being a Bobcat also means carrying pride for our school and representing its values in everything I do. As Head Captain of the Strutters, I’ve had the privilege of leading with spirit, discipline, and teamwork, and I work every day to bring that same energy into every part of campus life. Our community is built on diversity, resilience, and support for one another, and being a Bobcat means contributing to that culture in meaningful ways. It’s about striving for excellence, uplifting others, and making a positive impact that extends beyond the university.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
I have identity with being a bobcat long before my time at Texas State! Neither of my parents were fortunate enough to go college, so when my older sister chose to go to Texas State University my family dove head first into being a bobcat family! From parent weekends to baseball games to river trips, I have always wanted to be a bobcat and felt like one before I was a student! Being a bobcat means being not only a servant and leader on this campus, but also being compassionate and respectful of our campus and the student body! I have been involved in many different facets on campus, but my biggest blessing has been serving my student body to help make this campus as great as we know it can be!

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
To be a Texas State Bobcat, as a proud member of NAACP and a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, means standing at the intersection of tradition, purpose, and community, and using these positions to bring people together. For me, it is not just about wearing the maroon and gold, it is about living the values that make Texas State a place where everyone, especially POC students, can find belonging, connection, and strength. Being involved in many organizations within black TXST like the NAACP has shown me that leadership is about service, and that true community is built when we reach back, reach across, and lift each other up. Through Alpha Kappa Alpha, I’ve learned the power of unity among Black women and how sisterhood can become a foundation for change, and I've applied that to my approach towards my fellow peers. Being a Bobcat means taking that love and extending it beyond my letters. Inviting others in, collaborating across various organizations, and making sure that all voices, especially those often overlooked, are heard and valued is something that I prioritize as a student here at Texas State. Bringing people together isn’t always easy — but it’s necessary. Whether it’s organizing events that reach everyone on campus, advocating for equity on campus, or simply being present for those who need a safe space, I carry that responsibility with pride. Because at Texas State, we aren’t just here to exist, we’re here to build, to lead, and to leave it better than we found it. So, being a Bobcat to me means being a bridge. It means making space, holding space, and celebrating every part of who we are while bringing others along with us, which means we don’t leave anyone behind.

What does it mean to be a Bobcat?
Being a Texas State Bobcat means carrying a sense of pride, unity, and responsibility. It’s not just about being a student here; it’s about contributing to the culture and energy that make Texas State unique. From nights out on the Square to finding community by the river or in the stands on game day. For me, that’s looked like serving as president of the African Student Association, where I worked to build community and highlight the voices of Black and international students. It’s also been about creating spaces through off-campus organizations, such as my entertainment company, Diversum Entertainment, and the event group MoBoyz, which showcase student creativity and bring people together. Being a Bobcat has challenged me to step up as a leader, while also reminding me that our strength comes from supporting each other. To me, a Bobcat is someone who leaves the university better than they found it, and that’s the legacy I want to be part of.

To be a Texas State Bobcat means living with pride, passion, and purpose. It’s more than just wearing maroon and gold, it’s carrying the spirit of this campus everywhere you go. A Bobcat stands tall in the Quad, cheering loud in Bobcat Stadium, and always showing love for our traditions, from singing the fight song to floating the river. Being a Bobcat means community, we come from all walks of life, but when we’re here, we’re family. We support each other, celebrate each other, and push each other to grow. It’s about being resilient, showing up with energy, and representing Texas State with everything you do.
