Tammy Gonzales is Program Director for the Center for the Study of the Southwest and Associate Editor for Southwestern American Literature and Texas Books in Review, journals produced by the center. She holds a BA in English from Texas State and has been with the center since 2003. Originally from Atascosa County in South Texas, she's been in San Marcos since 2001. Tammy is co-creator of the center's Mi Cultura, Mi Comunidad/My Culture, My Community summer program for high school students. The program engages participants in examining the region's and the city's people, history, literature, and ecology in order to preserve, promote, and celebrate the arts, culture, and heritage of the greater Southwest. Tammy also sits on the editorial board for Nakum, a literary journal produced by the Indigenous Cultures Institute. She is an active member of the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos where she works closely with university and community members to organize Dia de los Muertos workshops and festivities.
