Inviting a Fulbright Scholar
The academic department hosting a visiting scholar is responsible for securing funding for any additional costs, as well as making all necessary arrangements, securing reservations and processing payments.
To invite an international scholar the sponsoring individual or department must first secure an appointment through Faculty and Academic Resources (FAR).
There are many ways that Texas State can invite an International Fulbright Scholar to campus:
· Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program
· Fulbright Junior Faculty Development Program for Lebanon
· Fulbright Junior Faculty Development Program for Egypt
· Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq
Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF)
The most common program is the Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF) with only a simple one-page application. This Fulbright program encourages current non-United States, Fulbright scholars, to make three-day visits to universities during their stays in the United States. These visits can involve classroom instruction, scholarly presentations, or consultations on curriculum (the broader the goals of the visit, the better). Over the past few years, Texas State has hosted scholars from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. Departments from across the university have served as hosts, allowing students and faculty access to respected international scholars and teachers.
Outreach Lecturing Fund Awards
OLF Awards are provided directly to the Fulbright Visiting Scholar and will cover the cost of airfare and ground transportation to and from the airport. The University is expected to cover the cost of local transportation, lodging accommodations, and meals.
Fulbright Scholar Directory
The current list of these International Fulbright Scholars can be accessed on the Fulbright Scholar Directory beginning in early October each year. The directory will list scholars' home regions, academic specialties, and dates of stay in the U.S. Because the University must make formal invitations and allow scholars to plan for and process their travel arrangements, interested faculty/departments-schools should anticipate using the fall to plan for a spring semester visit. It is imperative to begin this process early since visiting scholars are limited to no more than two such OLF-funded trips each.
