In the 1990s, a group of like-minded contrarians in Austin, Texas were reimagining an underground music scene. They actively embraced a do-it-yourself ethos, manifested through record labels that released local music, zines that replaced mainstream media outlets, and upstart clubs that provided a home venue for new bands to build their sound. The vibrant underground scene that emerged valued expression over erudition and blurred the boundaries between observer and participant, all the while becoming a spiritual crucible for the uneasy balance between commercial success and cultural authenticity, a tension that still resonates today.
To talk about this 1990s underground scene, the Center is excited to welcome Greg Beets – Austin Chronicle music journalist, local musician, and author of A Curious Mix of People, a book that uses oral history to tell the story of this transformative decade through the eyes of the musicians, writers, DJs, club owners, record-store employees, and other key figures who were there.
