Members present:

Guests: Dr. Mark Fronstad, Geography ,Scott Thomas, University Star

Meeting called to order at 4:00.

Faculty Handbook Revision: A motion was made to approve a draft addition to the current Faculty Handbook that would establish a policy on how the handbook will be revised in the future.  The rules were suspended to allow an immediate vote and the motion carried. The suggested revision is to be forwarded to the Office of the Provost.

Suggested Revisions to PPS 6.11: The Senate considered suggested revisions to PPS 6.11-Presidential Awards for Excellence in Service, Scholarly/Creative Activities, and Teaching.  After reviewing the suggested changes, a motion was made and seconded to accept the suggested revisions as amended.  The motion carried.  The Chair will forward the suggested changes to the Provost.

Sam’s Club Relationship: There was some discussion about whether it is appropriate for the University to host a sign-up drive for Sam’s Club memberships.  This is currently being done out of the Purchasing Office and seems togive endorsement to such memberships and an advantage to this retailer over others.  The Chair will make some polite inquiries about how decisions are made to provide this type of support to retailers.

Break:

Program Faculty: The title, Program Faculty, was discussed.  This seems to be a wild card job description that is being used when a more precise description is not available.  For example, the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry uses the job description for post-doctoral faculty who work in some laboratories.  The classification is also currently being used for the Associate Dean of Science.  The Chair will seek clarification into the specifics of how the classification is actually being used University wide.

Alcohol, Etc.: There was some discussion about the draft UPPS 04.04XX, Drugs, Alcohol and Performance Altering Substances Testing Policy that was being circulated.  The draft policy seems to extend a mandatory federal testing policy for positions requiring a commercial driver’s license to all University faculty and staff positions.  The Chair will make some inquiries as to how and who drafted the proposed policy.

Minutes: The minutes for 01/31/07 and 02/07/06 were approved as amended.
