The meeting was called to order by Chair Bible at 4:00 p.m.

GENERAL STUDIES DISCIPLINARY REQUIREMENTS

Dr. Brown, Dean of General Studies, presented and discussed a document entitled
"Disciplinary Requirements, College of General Studies." This is a model which
the General Studies Council has proposed for use in identifying and stating the
rationale for each disciplinary perspective in the SWT core curriculum. The
Senate voted unanimously to endorse the proposed model.

CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

The Senate's Curriculum Committee has considered several proposed changes in
departmental curricula, many of which involve disciplinary minors; Dr. Caruana,
chair of the committee, presented the committee report on these items. (This
report is attached to the permanent Minutes.) After a brief discussion, the
Senate voted unanimously to approve the committee report except for one portion
dealing with proposed changes in a minor in Political Communication offered by
the Department of Speech Communication; the Senate was advised that the
Curriculum Committee has not taken final action on this pro- posal, and the
Senate agreed to postpone its decision on this proposal pending such final
action by the committee.

CAD/SENATE MEETING FOLLOW-UP

The Senate discussed its reaction to last week's meeting with the Deans
Council. Among other things, it noted that some of the deans have not yet
responded to the Senate's request for a report on recipients of, and criteria
used in deter- mining, faculty bonus awards, and it voted to renew that request
and to send it to VPAA Gratz.

The Senate also voted to charge its Tenure, Promotion and Compensation
Committee with developing recommendations for proposed changes in PPS 7.10,
which involves performance and merit money allocation. The Senate has
previously noted its objections to changes in the PPS which have been proposed
by the administration, and it has now decided to come forward with its own
version of this PPS. The Senate also voted to charge its Academic Governance
Committee with exploring the question of the status of PPS's, UPPS's, etc.

Finally, the Senate voted to have Chair Bible visit with the Deans Council to
see how a more productive Deans/Senate relationship might be developed.

PPS AMENDMENTS

The Senate discussed proposed changes in PPS's involving the Presidential Award
for Excellence in Teaching, Scholarly/Creative Activity, and Service. It voted
to approve these proposed changes except insofar as they exclude SWT Lecturers
from eligibility. The Senate also approved a proposed PPS involving the
administration of the Academic Affairs division.

RESEARCH ENHANCEMENT GRANTS

The Senate voted to approve a letter drafted by Senators Irvin and Conroy to be
sent to all recipients of faculty research grants since 1995, asking them to
report on the outcomes of their research by December 1.

COMMITTEE ON EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

The Senate was asked to furnish the names of three Senators to serve on the
university committee which will choose the Presidential Award for Excellence in
Teaching; it voted to submit the names of Senators Deduck, Bechtol, and Oliver.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMITTEE

Senator Hays was appointed to the Centennial Celebration Committee.

MINUTES OF 10/1

The Senate voted to approve the minutes of the 10/1 meeting.
