Research in the Irvin Group
Our research is focused in two distinct areas: electroactive polymers and nanoparticle modifications.
Our electroactive polymer research focuses on designing novel monomers and polymers for use in a variety of applications including energy storage, biomedical sensors, and static dissipation. Novel monomers and polymers are synthesized and characterized with the goal of enhancing solubility and/or enhancing stability in the n-doped state. Promising polymers are incorporated into devices and tested. The use of hard and soft templates to control polymer morphology is being investigated as a way to optimize electoactivity and device performance.
Our nanoparticle research is focused on how nanoparticles can be prepared or modified for use as enhanced efficiency fuels. Novel methods of preparation of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles have been developed. Functionalization and/or coating of nanoparticles provide a way to modify nanoparticle surfaces to control reactivity and properties.
